It is also a profoundly radical statement on Black freedom and self-determination, and the morality of revolutionary violence. On January 1, 1804, after a thirteen-year struggle marked by imperial intrigue and sanguinary violence, Dessalines declared Haiti an independent republic, forever abolishing slavery on the island.
